“Joseph, What Have You Done?”, the anticipated new full-length album from prodigious and defining contemporary UK artist Rainy Miller will be released on May 2nd via his own Fixed Abode label.
Having established himself at the forefront of the new sound of the UK, spearheading the boundary-less scene of alternative music, and gaining continued critical acclaim over the past few years, Rainy Miller presents his most personal project, the culmination of five years of work. The release follows on from his breakout album “Desquamation” (2022) and follow up, collaborative full-length “A Grisaille Wedding” (2023).
“Joseph, What Have You Done?” is an album that sees Rainy bifurcating and juxtaposing moments of beautiful, heartwarming melodies against bone-shattering breaks of noise, using tension as a tool to emphasize its moments of splendour, both musically and lyrically. The project is a journey across the intrinsic exploration of personal trauma, growth, acceptance and appreciation, projected against the backdrop of spirituality – rather insinuated than explicit.
Initially inspired by the 2003 documentary ‘Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus’, an exploration of the intersection between Christianity and country music in the American South, Rainy became entrenched in the parallel similarities between the stories in the film to the stark realities of his own surroundings, the North of England. Internalizing these connections, and reflecting on his own lived experiences, Rainy created ‘Joseph’ in an aesthetic he coins the Northern Gothic, a quasi anthropological British pastiche of the American Southern Gothic realm of the early 20th century.
Visually, the project references the forgotten notion of storytelling and the feeling of community that is prevalent amongst everyday life in the post-industrial North of England. In its bleak and often antiquated surroundings, Rainy explores the inherited pragmatism and resilience of its inhabitants, interjecting his own struggles and conciliations.
To aide in bringing the music to its full potential, Rainy recruited a varied crew of musicians who lend their own interpretation of the Northern Gothic aesthetic both lyrically and musically. ‘Vengeance’ sees frantic vocals from Graham Sayle of Hi-Vis juxtaposed to the atmospheric piano of Danish composer August Rosenbaum. Elsewhere on ‘Obsidian’, Danish jazz drummer and multi-faceted creative J Ludwig III provides a momentary explosive release from the album’s tension, whilst Manchester-based artist Christ Bryan graces the title track with a powerful resolving sermon, backed by the rejoicing string arrangement of More Eaze.
‘Joseph, What Have You Done?’ is a journey through the emotional exploration and its resulting acceptance, of the necessity to evolve from your own past, personally and as a wider community, by finding the empowerment to guide your lived experience consciously, rather than shackled by memories of your past.
